From there, we went to the Orange Walk District where the PUP controls three of four seats. But this time, UDP is hoping to gain ground there. So, both sides had something to prove when their 4 candidates were nominated.
The PUP was the first to go in the morning, when the rains were pouring down. Still, they had an impressive showing. We spoke with all 4 candidates who are trying to get elected:
Then, in the afternoon, the 4 UDP candidates, led by Gaspar Vega, took their turn to flex. By that time, the weather had improved, and when all 4 crowds merged, it was impressive. Here's what the UDP politicians told us:
In Orange Walk, we'd have to declare the UDP as the winner of the numbers game. They brought out a few more hundred supporters than the PUP, most of which came from Orange Walk North, where Gaspar Vega has established a UDP stronghold. The party sent us pictures of captured from their drone camera, which shows a few thousand in attendance for a post-nomination rally. That's after a large portion of their crowd had left the area following a late evening downpour.
