Floodwaters Receding, But Riverside Communities Must Be On Lookout
posted (November 16, 2015)
And so tonight NEMO is monitoring water levels across the country - especially in the West, the south and central Belize. Low lying bridges in the west like this one at Iguane Creek have been under water all weekend due to the steadily rising Macal river. The Roaring Creek Bridge remains open while water hovers less than a foot below the deck.

Overall, waters are receding, folks have returned home from shelters and the weather is improving.

NEMO's latest update says that flood waters continue to threaten these communities in the Cayo District: Arenal; Succotz; Calla Creek; La Clarissa; Siete Millas; Barton Creek; San Marcos; Billy White; Central Farm; Buena Vista; Ramonal; Paslow Falls, Bullet Tree Falls; Santa Familia, Branch Mouth, and Roaring Creek, More Tomorrow in the Cayo.

NEMO warns that communities in the Belize River Valley and along the old Northern road must prepare for rising waters. The advisory, says, quote, "Farmers with livestock MUST take the necessary actions before it is too late. The Willows bank livestock facility is available for use." End quote. The BDF and the Coast Guard are on standby for river rescue missions.

In the Toledo District, Bladen River has receded to 7 ft. above normal, the Blue Creek River is at normal level, the Temash River (Crique Sarco) is 5 ft. above normal, Aguacate is 2 ft. above normal, Big falls river is 13ft below the bridge and continues to recede. In San Miguel the river receded to 3 ft. below the deck of bridge.

In Golden Stream twenty families went to a shelter, but they have all returned home. NEMO says that immediate food relief has been channeled to these to twenty 20 households.

There are still shelterees in Bladden village where twenty nine (29) families are sheltering in the Catholic and the Baptist Church where they have received water and food. In Bella Vista fifteen families had to be evacuated. In Trio 26 families that were affected received water and food. NEMO reports that an overall assessment is being conducted of homes and farms to determine their losses and follow up assistance; including relief distribution and medical visits, which are underway.

NEMO notes that all major highways are open to traffic from border to border. The low-lying wooden bridge across the Macal River connecting San Ignacio and Santa Elena is closed.
