2 prisoners escaped from Dangriga Police yesterday, and tonight, one of them is still on the run.
At around 4:00, Police were transporting remanded inmates Lawrence Bernardez, Edan Guzman, and Daniel McKenzie from Dangriga to the Central Prison in Hattieville in the pan of a pick-up truck. Sources tell us the men were not properly restrained, but police assert that they were properly handcuffed.
Whatever the case, when the police mobile slowed for the speed bump in Hattieville – just a hundred feet from the village police station - Bernardez and Guzman jumped out of the vehicle, and ran off into the nearby bushes.
Police set chase, and caught Guzman, but the officer says he put a fight, and the cop shot him in the leg. He was transported to the KHMH with a gunshot wound to the thigh.
In the chaos, Bernardez managed to give police the slip, and he remains on the run tonight. We don't know how he did that since Police say in a press release that he was cuffed to the hands and feet – and more than that, he escaped close to a police station. Still, he is at large, and police are asking for your help to locate and capture him. Anyone with information is asked to contact the nearest police station.
The only Laurence Bernardes in our archives has been accused of theft and armed assault in the past – and was shot by police in 2012.
