The contraband czar, Ernesto Alonso de Miguel, known as El Espanol - he based his contraband operations in the Corozal Free Zone - but he was executed in Chetumal three weeks ago - while he was at a restaurant having dinner with his family.
And while it happened across the border, Mexican authorities believe his killer came from here! A website called "Periodistas Quintana Roo" reports that the Mexican Attorney General's officer is cooperating closely with Belizean authorities to find the suspect. The news outlet reports that no formal collaboration has been requested because there is no diplomatic agreement between the two countries, but they have discussed an exchange of information.
Mexican authorities believe that "El Espanol's" killer entered Chetumal by boat through the Bay of Chetumal and after committing the murder fled towards the Boulevard Bay Avenue leading to the State Congress and then hopped on the same boat to flee to Belize.
They have concluded this based on accounts of witnesses and the images captured by surveillance cameras from a nearby establishment.
There was no comment from Belize police.
