Cabbie Killed In The South
posted (December 16, 2015)

Last night, we told you about the murder of 64 year-old Antonio Rodriguez, better known as "Sapote". The well-known taxi man from Eldridgeville, Toledo was found murdered in a remote location just outside of Punta Gorda town.

He is known as a hard worker, but sometime on Tuesday before midday, a customer, someone he most likely knew, lured him to that location and stabbed him multiple times while he was driving the taxi. He had his licensed handgun beside him, but investigators believe that because the attacker surprised him from behind in the backseat, he did not have any opportunity to draw it.

So, why would anyone want to kill the older man? That's what our news team went to PG to find out today. Daniel Ortiz reports:

Just after midday yesterday, taxi driver Antonio "Sapote" Rodriguez, was found here on this feeder road just outside of Punta Gorda Town.

He had been stabbed multiple times and left for dead, an uncharacteristic and violent end for this productive community member.

One of his fellow taxi drivers, the last person to speak with Rodriguez while he was alive, recounted their conversation before he left on a taxi run.

Rigo - Taxi Driver

"He repeated the little sign that I have there and he repeated it to me and I was glad that he read it. I just told him to believe in Jesus Christ because that's all about in my taxi, trying to proclaim Jesus Christ message also. A few hours after that, that same taxi driver, he's my comrade; he was murdered."

2 hours later, police found his lifeless body on the side of a feeder road in an area near to the Joe Taylor Bridge.

Supt. Simeon Alvarez - OC, Punta Gorda Town

"The police responded to that information and upon the arrival there, the saw the lifeless body of a Hispanic descent person, who was later identified as Antonio Rodriguez, 61 years old taxi driver of El Ridge village. The police also observed multiple stab wounds to the upper part of his body. Just next to him was his license 9 millimetre. His vehicle was about 10 to 15 yards away from him. And at the location where we found the vehicle, we strongly believe that at the time, when he was stabbed, he was driving an Isuzu Trooper. So we strongly suspect that the person may have been seated to the back of the driver."

Police believe that at the very least, Rodriguez, knew and trusted his killer. They have also ruled out robbery as a motive.

Supt. Simeon Alvarez - OC, Punta Gorda Town

"The motive for the murder is definitely not robbery. As I had mentioned earlier, the firearm was just next to him, chrome 9 millimetre and his wallet was intact also. So we're looking at other angles to really verify what was the cause for that crime to be committed."

Rigo - Taxi Driver

"Somebody called him up; he was killed in his cab."

Daniel Ortiz

"Do you all believe he was lured to that location?"

Supt. Simeon Alvarez - OC, Punta Gorda Town

"Definitely he was lured to that location because if you go to that area, it's very remote, not a residential area. And I believe that he may have trusted the person that took him off that Feeder Road. So I strongly believe he know who his killer is."

Rodriguez was well-known in the Town and surrounding villages and his friendly and easy-going disposition were well known.

Supt. Simeon Alvarez - OC, Punta Gorda Town

"Since been here 2013 I have known Mr. Rodriguez better known as Sapote. I've known him to be a very jovial person, he's friendly."

Evert Mangar - Brother in Law Of Deceased

"My brother in law, he was a good person and the family loves him a lot. He was a taxi driver, did taxi for x amount of years in PG. He actually lived right next door to me and we had a good relationship. When it comes to the family, I could say Antonio was always there for the family. Like every other family you have little ups and downs but I should say that, whatever we can work out, Antonio is willing to work it out with us, we get along really well."

"He is well known to a lot of people in PG so right now, it's just hard to tell how something like that could happen to him."

Daniel Ortiz

"It sound as though you and the rest of the family are caught off guard to this violent way in which he was killed."

Evert Mangar - Brother in Law Of Deceased

"Very off guard; yesterday when I got the news it was a shock to the family, knowing Mr. Antonio he would never put himself in those kind of situation."

We understand from family and friends in PG that his wife and children were in London. When they received the news of his murder, they immediately made arrangements to return to Belize to make funeral arrangements.

Investigators are following up with his fellow taxi colleagues to try to solve his murder. They are also looking into his history to find out if he had any enemies.
