PUP, Who’s Running The Ship?
posted (December 18, 2015)
Who's in charge of the PUP? It matters right now because there's a three way race for leader of the party, and whichever faction controls the party machinery - has a distinct tactical advantage. On Tuesday, Chairman Henry Usher told the media that he currently holds the reigns; here's what he said:..

"Who is the leader of the People's United Party at this point?"

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman
"Currently we have a leader of the opposition in the house. There is no leader per say. The leader stepped down after the election. The national executive is overseeing the governance of the party for now."

"I just ask because in the 6 weeks leading up to convention, who controls the secretariat? Who controls Positive Vibes, who controls the Belize Times?"

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman
"The secretariat and those organs are being managed by the national executive which is chaired by myself."

And if Usher was holding the reigns - it would seem to hold some advantage for the Cordel Hyde Camp since we have learnt that Usher was nominated as Chairman by the Chairman of the Albert Division, who also nominated Cordel Hyde.

But, yesterday at a meeting of the PUP national executive, we are told Usher got a scolding and a come-uppance. He was reminded of the minutes of the last national executive meeting on Wednesday, November 11th. Those minutes confirm that members of the executive agreed that Fonseca would remain leader of the party and leader of the opposition in the house after a new leader was elected.

Chairman Usher, we are told was reminded of this at the meeting - and was supposed to address the media on it. But, it turns out that Secretary General Myrtle Palacio ended up doing it.

Myrtle Palacio, Secretary General - PUP
"We have a party leader right now until a new party leader is elected. He is Francis Fonseca. He is also the leader of the opposition."

Palacio - we are told may also be tapped to oversee the convention itself on January 31st. That will be held in Belmopan where about 2800 delegates are expected to vote.
