PUP NPC For NC
posted (January 11, 2016)
On Saturday, close to three-hundred PUP Delegates crowded into party headquarters at Independence Hall. They were there for a national party council meeting, the preparatory session to agree on the ground rules for the National Convention, which will be held at the end of this month. While they were there to talk party business- we were outside to talk politics - and we did with anyone we could grab while they were going in. We asked them what's going to happen in the upcoming convention.

Jules Vasquez
"Do you all feel you all will be able to get enough to claim victory for both yourself and for Mr. Briceno?"

Hon. Jose Mai, OW South candidate for Deputy
"Jules, from the campaign that we are doing, from the different constituencies the response is very reassuring and satisfactory. I am entirely convinced that we will win the convention on that day."

Jules Vasquez
"You don't know half the people who are the delegates. You don't know them and Mr. Briceno doesn't know them. You literally don't. No fault of yours."

Hon. Jose Mai, OW South candidate for Deputy
"Nobody knows them. None of us who are running knows them. But that's why we are trying to get to know them. We are meeting, we are going from constituency to constituency and it's difficult to meet on one to one basis. But I am certain that when we are finish spoken, they have a better understanding."

Michel Chebat, Cayo North, 118 delegates
"I have decided who I am voting for. We have open our delegates in Cayo North to the 3 candidates. We want the 3 candidates to come out there and to explain to our delegates what their plans are for the party and we are leaving it to the delegates to decide who they are going to vote for."

Jules Vasquez
"You can't just leave 118 in the lurch. 118 is 10% of what's needed to make anyone leader in a 3 way race. You have to tell them listen, hear what is going on, if so and so win, we will not eat. We will get boxed out in Cayo North. At some point you have to have a real talk with your delegates."

Michel Chebat, Cayo North, 118 delegates
"Well, you know what, I would like to think that based on our performance in Cayo North, based on the fact that Cayo North is one the more important constituencies - whoever wins would want to work with us in Cayo North. I have very smart delegates. They know what time it is. They know the history of the party. They know the history of the candidates. They know what my preference is. But it's a matter for them at the end of the day."

Jules Vasquez
"Are you holding your delegates strong? Are you able to assure anybody that my block of delegates, 130 plus will support Francis Fonseca?"

Hon. Oscar Requena, Toledo West, Candidate for CHMN
"Jules at the end of the day we speak to our people. It's obvious that I am supporting the Hon. Francis Fonseca and we are talking to our people. But at the end of the day our people will decide."

Jules Vasquez
"Yeah, because at the end of the day you can't control them. 130 people are a lot to control. It's hard to control 13."

Hon. Oscar Requena, Toledo West, Candidate for CHMN
"At the end of the day - let me put it this way, I have a very close good working relationship with my constituents."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"I personally believe Francis is the better candidate, but I can't force anybody to vote for him. What I do is in our area and the area that we are going, we give the delegates our point of view. But at the end of the day, every delegate, just like in a general election will be responsible. It's between him and the Lord and they are in the ballot box and they will make a decision."

Jules Vasquez
"Now your delegates can vote as they wish as you said, but they don't have to worry for voting for you because you are already a deputy by acclamation or by lack of opposition. Am I right? You are the deputy for the west."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"Yes. By default. Nobody challenge me."

Jules Vasquez
"That's no way to win an election. I know you don't like conventions - that's your history. But that's not democracy."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"What will I do if no one else wants to participate?"

Jules Vasquez
"But the constitution is silent on that. I read the constitution. It says nothing about a deputy from the west."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"No. the constitution says that we 4 deputy and since John Briceno was leader who set the policy is that the concept behind the 4 deputy is that it would be regional deputy and since I became a deputy - that's all that I have been doing - is working as a deputy for the west."

Jules Vasquez
"So then you concede its convention on conceptual, but not constitutional?"

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"In politics you have a little field to play with."

Jules Vasquez
"Sir you are if anybody is a fastidious stickler for the letter of the law. We saw how vigorous you were in defending the public finance, ultimately futile, but how vigorously you defend it."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"Temporarily."

Jules Vasquez
"I am saying that either it's the letter of the constitution or it's not."

Hon. Julius Espat, Deputy for West
"I don't have any problem. But I am saying is that I have served the party as a deputy for the west."

Hon. Cordel Hyde, Candidate for Leader
"We've been talking to delegates all over this country and they've been pretty positive. The response have been overwhelming and so we are looking forward in talking to the rest of delegates all over this country, because those are the people who will decide this election."

Hon. Landy Habet, Cayo NE, supporting Fonseca
"I have informed my delegates that I am supporting Francis Fonseca. I had no problem with the other two candidates. But they do not necessarily have to go the way I go. They are free to vote for who they want. I would like for them to support me and support the candidate I support. But I cannot control 100 delegates."

Micah Goodin, Delegate, supporting Cordel Hyde
"We need a fresh start, we need a sincere leader, we need a charismatic leader. If Cordel Hyde sits one on one with anybody, I guarantee you that he can convince them to support the People's United Party and that is what we need, because money will never solve our problems. No matter how much money the People's United Party has, the United Democratic Party will always have more. So we need credibility, we need sincerity, we need to return to our roots, we need to serve the people, we need to have that one on one connection with the people and charisma is what the People's United Party needs. Charisma is what Francis Fonseca lacks. He can't even look into the camera."
