Alleged Murderer Smuggled Weed
posted (April 8, 2016)
27 year-old John Martinez, a prisoner on remand for murder, is facing an additional charge of drug trafficking after he allegedly tried to smuggle weed into prison after a court appearance.

Martinez was transported from the Prison to the Supreme Court for a court hearing on Tuesday. It would have been a routine adjournment except when he was transported back to the Prison, the on-duty officer performed the usual search.

When Martinez was searched the first time, he found nothing. But, the officer observed that he had an irregular gait - he was walking funny, and so the officer did a second search. He ended up finding 17.6 grams of marijuana inside one of Martinez's sneakers. It was duck- taped to the sole.

Because Martinez tried to smuggle the drugs into a rehabilitation facility, he was charged with drug trafficking. He pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer. Because he's on remand for murder, there was no bail consideration for this charge, so his case was adjourned until June 6.
