Budna, Victimized For Tense Border Relations?
posted (April 26, 2016)
That event immediately overheated Belize - Guatemala relations - and according to Guatemalan news reports, Joseph Budna was the only Belizean made to pay for it.

If you watch the news regularly, you definitely know who Budna is. The 38 year old freelance journalist, living in Guatemala, has always had a flair for the dramatic, and a knack to end up in the strangest situations.

From assisting to free a Belizean busted with drugs in Guatemala in 2010, to jumping out of a moving vehicle to escape dangerous hijackers in 2011, to even being arrested in Guatemala on charges of kidnapping in 2012- for which he is still serving time.

He has developed quite a history of bad-luck over the last decade, which would have ended with him being convicted in Guatemala for kidnapping and attempting to escape prison but tonight Budna has joined the national conversation on the Belize/Guatemala dispute. That's because he was allegedly beaten up by Guatemalan inmates yesterday as a form of retaliation for the slaying of the Guatemalan child.

A report from Canal Antigua said that the incident involved prisoners from sector 5 of the prison at Cantel, Quetzaltenango. In an interview with Canal Antigua, the prison spokesperson said that some 10 to 12 inmates were involved in the prison brawl that left Budna injured.

"At the moment the investigation is still ongoing, but so far we understand that approximately 10 to 12 persons were involved in the fight. The reason and the motivation for it will obviously be part of the ongoing investigation. As a result of the fight 5 persons were injured, out of those, 3 had to be transported to a nearby public medical center. The other 2 were attended inside the area and have obviously been taken back to their section. In theory, at section 5 of the central prison, where this violent incident occurred, the injuries that the 5 received were with use of a cutting weapon, and three of them were stab wounds."

The report did not give details of the nature of Budna's injuries.
