Hon. Elrington And The Peace Pipe
posted (June 8, 2016)

And, while he shrugged that one off, it seems, that neighborly spirit extends also to the Guatemalan fishers who freely throw their nets and cast their lines on Belize’s side of the Sarstoon.  Sounding like he had just taken a deep pull from the peace pipe, Elrington said, let it be:

Jules Vasquez
"Those who have been operating with impunity on the Sarstoon are Guatemalan fishers. Is there any plan to enforce fishing laws of our nation on our side of the river?"

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"I am not aware that our laws are not being enforced on our side of the river, I am not aware of that. You don't want people to get killed over controversy over fish or any such thing like that. The ideal situation is to work out the situation and it's something that fish no stay one place they come in the side and they go this side. So I think the wise thing, the wise frame of mind is try to work out a protocol where by you can share peaceful coexistence work with it; in my mind the ideal situation would be to ensure that doesn't become a cause of conflict. Find a way to work on it so that life could go on in peaceful harmonious way. That is my disposition, pretty sure that is the Prime Minister's disposition as well; we don't want to get people killed over some fish."
