Hope Beyond The Blaze
posted (July 8, 2016)
There is hope beyond the blaze for San Pedro islanders. Today the town's NEMO branch sent a press release outlining the various ongoing efforts to help the 98 people who lost everything in the June 27th fire. The flames consumed 11 buildings and damaged 7 on Pescador Drive. It was a heartbreaking scene as popular businesses, cherished family homes and apartments were all gutted in the fire. Well, those 98 San Pedro residents are slowly putting their lives back together with help from the Emergency Operations Committee, the Belize Red Cross and other organizations. The fire victims have been supplied with clothes, food, mattresses, table top stoves and other household appliances and hygiene kits. The families were also put up in hotels and were offered counseling if needed.

Presently, the humanitarian efforts continue and the disaster relief team is asking everyone to chip in. The San Pedro Lions Club and Red Cross have already raised $225,000 but they need more to match the $1 million dollar cost of property damage. If you would like to help the San Pedro Fire victims you can deposit money to the San Pedro Red Cross Belize Bank Account number 620911031720 or the San Pedro Lions Club Atlantic Bank Account number 211382902. Deadline for donations is July 31st. In terms of the investigation, the fire department told us this evening that it is now confirmed as a case of arson which started in an unoccupied wooden building owned by Gus Tabony.
