Cork Street Assault In Tourism Zone Doesn’t Surprise Hotelier
posted (August 30, 2016)
This morning there was a stabbing on Cork Street - that's in the heart of a Tourist Zone, right down the street from the Radisson and a street over from the Tourism Village. But, the victim wasn't a tourist - it was a Radisson employee on his way to work. He may have been targeted by gang players from nearby Majestic Alley because he's from a southside neighborhood that's part of the ongoing gang warfare. We found out more when we reviewed the security footage:..

Jules Vasquez reporting
At five to 7:00 this morning, Kendale Green was riding to work at the Radisson Fort George on Cork Street when two men charged out of an alley and tackled him off his bike and then started stabbing him. In the grainy security footage, right in the margins of the time stamp, you can see them hauling him to the middle of the street and stabbing him repeatedly.

After about 20 seconds of that, one of them dashed back through the alley while the other rides off on Green's bike. Green, remarkably, had the power to walk down the street to the Radisson, watching his back all the while - where he then collapsed on the street side.

Police arrived within two minutes and Green by then unconscious and mostly unresponsive is carted into the back of the police pickup and driven away.

It was captured by this Radisson security camera where manager, Jim Scott told us that Green had only been working there a few months as a steward in housekeeping - and to see him attacked like that was shocking but not altogether surprising:

Jim Scott, GM - RADISSON FORT GEORGE
"These guys were waiting in the alley just down the street from us and there were pedestrians and vehicle that were passing by and they obviously saw this young man and they came out of the alley with vicious intent. I don't think they were trying to get anything off of him though. It was obviously just the attack and the malicious intent. Because he had a bag and stuff like that. They didn't get any of that. I understand they took his bike, but I think that was just use a vehicle to get away faster."

Now, this happened in a tourist area, just a few hundred feet from his hotel, but Scott says it shouldn't be a worry to his guests.

Jim Scott, GM - RADISSON FORT GEORGE
"It was an isolated incident. Our guests are pretty safe. There is 24 hours patrols here in the neighborhood. Because of the tourism village, the police are here quite a bit. It's still a pretty safe neighborhood and things do happen once in a while to locals and to tourists, but like 5-6 years ago, it was worse I think. There was a lot more predatorial type robberies and stiff like this. This was an isolated incident and it was some type of vicious hit. I guess that's the street culture right now."

But it's not a story his guests are likely to see on the news:

Jim Scott, GM - RADISSON FORT GEORGE
"Well we don't show our local news in the hotel unless somebody wants to have their own personal channel turned to that. So, like in public areas we don't normally show local news, because our news is pretty violent and consistently depressing, reflective of leadership. You look at what goes on in our news and the display of leadership, even recently it's frightening and it's no surprise that some of our youth are going to act out to the extreme to what we are seeing on TV and we are leading by example aren't we? And these youths they don't have enough opportunities, they don't have enough outlets and "you could do it, I will do it and I will do it worse than you." However you want to look at it, it's a real shame. You got roughed up last week yourself and a good citizen. I don't know, it's scary right now. It really scary. We are not financially poor, we are socially poor right now."

22 year old Kendale Green received surgery and is in a stable condition. Notably, he got off a murder charge in April of 2015. He had been accused of the murder of a Nigerian Taxi Driver - but he got off when the main witness said she could not remember her statement.
