PM Niece Recovering After Gunshot
posted (September 16, 2016)
You've seen a lot of the Prime Minister on the news so far after he spent the day meeting with the Unions. That encounter with him also gave us the opportunity to ask about his niece, Candice Anderson, who was shot yesterday.

She was at a yard on 7th Street with other persons. That's when a man opened fire on the crowd and injured her twice. Today, we asked the Prime Minister about her condition:

Rt., Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"As far as I know, she had surgery and the prognosis is that she would make a full recovery so we are very thankful for that."

Daniel Ortiz, 7News
"Sir, do you know the extent of her injuries?"

Rt., Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"My understanding is that…when I went yesterday evening, she was still sedated, but my understanding is that she sustained two gunshot wounds; one in her leg and one in what was described to me as her flank. I'm not quite sure what flank means in that context, but that's what I was told."

Isani Cayetano
"Have you had a chance to speak with your sister in terms of how they are holding up and what's going on their end?"

Rt., Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"I was there at her house with her yesterday afternoon and I think by then, yesterday evening, by then it was known that Candace should make a full recovery so that greatly eased whatever pressure there had initially been."

Daniel Ortiz, 7News
"Sir the opponents of the government will try to take this as an issue for political football, it has already hit the Amandala newspaper as the "PM's niece in an area that the GSU called "weed paradise"." Can you talk to us about that aspect of it, what was she doing there?"

Rt., Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"Of course I can't talk to you about that because I don't know. I haven't spoken to my niece. As I told you, when I went to the hospital, she was sedated so I hadn't even seen her. I am afraid you would have to ask her those questions when she is in a position to talk to her."

Isani Cayetano
"There are people who would say well in your case, crime has hit close to home. In the grand scheme of things, addressing some of the issues that leads to crime and violence as it concerns your niece?"

Rt., Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister of Belize
"Well not as it concerns my niece; as it concerns the general public. We are trying to do that constantly. It is a continuous labour and we will proceed in the way we've been going, hoping always for improvements."

Candice Anderson is a Central Bank employee, and she's also the daughter of "Sister B", the Prime Minister's sister who is his political officer and reported successor in the Queen Square division.
