Chamber Chides Church Senator
posted (October 3, 2016)
In Friday's news, we had extensive coverage of the Senate Meeting where all sides hammered out the terms for Senate Select Committee to investigate the Auditor General's Reports on the Immigration Department. But, just because it reached a conclusion, that doesn't mean everyone's happy about it.

On Friday evening, the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry released a statement to voice its discontent. That statement says, quote, "We will review our options in light of the terms and composition of the Special Select Committee further to the motion passed today... Any special select committee which is shackled by terms such as those in the motion passed today or with the limitations indicated by the terms of reference is unacceptable, and extremely concerning.

The PUP has also sent out a press release scolding the Government for using their majority to get the Church Senator's motion to pass.

They say, quote, "The PUP deplores the fact that the motion presented by Senator Ashley Rock was not a motion from the Church, but in fact a Government Motion. This was a brazen attempt by Senator Rocke and the UDP Government to deceive the Belizean people and the Senate." End Quote.

Church Senator Rocke also got another scolding from the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB). That's the group who had no say in his appointment as their representative, and they say that they are disappointed in his action.

Their statement says, quote, "It is clear that Senator Rocke represents the minuscule number of pastors that nominated him, and not the larger body of national Churches. The Senate Committee is now positioned to accomplish absolutely nothing of any kind of needed accountability. It's a sad day for Belize democracy." End Quote
