Utility Unions Urge Teachers Back To The Negotiating Table To Fight For 3%
posted (October 5, 2016)

And while the temporary teachers await activation, tomorrow, the real teachers take it to the streets in demonstrations all across the country – but who will join them? – And we don’t just mean bystanders, we mean which union.  As we showed you yesterday, the PSU is just starting its national consultations and the Belize City one ended with no clear consensus on whether to join them tomorrow.  But the utility unions met into the night, and issued a press release saying that they support the BNTU 100%, while also urging them to go back to the negotiating table.

The release says, QUOTE, “we hereby…express our support for the teachers to be paid their 3% increase….we…call on other members of the joint negotiating team…to do their utmost best to unify their position in this regard.â€￾  End quote. This statement refers to the fact that two of the unions – the PSU and the APSSM have agreed to defer their 3% increase.

So the utilities say, quote, “We believe it would be prudent for the joint team to go back to the Prime Minister in a serious and unified effort…â€￾

As for the BNTU’s famous 8 issues the utility unions say, quote, “these would be best addressed and resolved through the synchronized efforts of all trade unions under the umbrella organization which is the NTUCB. It adds we also agree 100% with the BNTU in that government must do their very best to urgently address them. “
