PUP Calls For PM’s Resignation Over BTL Compensation
posted (October 14, 2016)

And with all this agitation already ongoing, the PUP threw one more log on the fire this afternoon.  The party held its own hastily called press conference to demand Prime Minister Barrow’s resignation.  Â Now, the opposition calls for this at least once every quarter, so that’s not really news, but this time they did give us some news.  According to the PUP, today the Government of Belize paid the Ashcroft Alliance 67.5 million US dollars – part settlement for the BRTL acquisition.  PUP Deputy Leader Kareem Musa told the press two hours ago that this had substantially weakened Belize’s foreign reserves:…

Hon. Kareem Musa - Caribbean Shores Representative
"Today is the day that the Government of Belize has paid to the Ashcroft group USD 67.5 Million. This sum of money has been drawn down from our foreign reserves which now stand at very dangerously low levels. I think you could recall some months ago that the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Ysaguirre, had issued a letter warning about the dangerously low levels.â€￾

“And what are we paying for? The Prime Minister said that we are going to get 'value for money'- those are the words he used. But yet, we get a sloppy agreement, a poorly drafted agreement. That is reckless and I would dare say that that is misfeasance in public life that is a case that warrants a misfeasance in public office claim, because Denys Barrow went on record. But he has gone on record to say he is not responsible for the sloppy, the poor drafting of that settlement agreement. So, the question is then: Is it Barrow and Williams? Is it Rodwell Williams who was the one who drafted that settlement agreement which is now costing Belizeans an additional 4 Million dollars? Is it Rodwell Williams? "

Musa says the PUP is considering bringing a misfeasance claim against the Prime Minister.
