Teachers Say GOB Should Not Dock Pay
posted (October 19, 2016)

And, as you heard from the Wesley Principal, the teachers are willing to make up the time, but not if the Ministry will dock their pay. As we showed you last night, the Chief Education Officer, Dr. Carol Babb, sent a memorandum to the school managers all across the country which says, quote, "The Government of Belize… will be withholding its contribution toward the salaries for individual teachers for the days when those teachers were on strike." The BNTU is not simply letting that one go unchallenged.

They released a statement today saying quote, "We wish to advise and reassure our members/teachers that the BNTU is currently seeking legal advice on this latest attack by the Government Belize and the Ministry of Education to determine how to deal with the implications of this memo." End Quote.

It continues with a not so thinly veiled threat which says, quote, "Be reminded that we have  that we have only put our strike action on hold'. Despite our teachers' good faith intent to make up lost time with our students, the Government continues to act in bad faith by attempting to strong hold the process of governing payment of grants and salaries. BNTU further calls on the managements of schools not to succumb to the threat and bullying tactics by GOB/Ministry of Education". End quote.
