Andre Vega and Sharon Pitts - they both got huge compensation payouts from the Ministry of Natural Resources when the Lands Department gave them title for parcels of land which were already privately owned.
It's a transaction and subsequent scandal which effectively ended the cabinet tenure of former lands Minister Gaspar Vega - who is Andre's father. But, that wasn't the end of it, because on October 31st the Ministry of Natural Resources wrote to Pitts and Vega demanding that they refund the compensation money within one month.
Well, the news tonight is that they didn't - and so, next week, the Solicitor General is expected to file suit against both Pitts and Vega.
Minister of Natural Resources Vanessa Retreage told us via text, quote, "Mrs. Pitts Robateau responded through her attorney Mr. Hubert Elrington indicating that a response would be forthcoming by 1 December 2016 but no such response has been received. Mr. Vega has not responded. Instructions have been given to the Acting Solicitor General to prepare the claims against both persons with the intent to file the same before the year's end."
Government's argument in court is expected to be based on the reasoning that when Vega and Pitts collected the "compensation" amounts, they made "certain representations and warranties which were breached." Government says that by the terms of the agreement, they agreed to indemnify the Government against all liabilities that may arise "from the breach of the warranties and representations."
