Family Loses Everything to Blaze
posted (December 16, 2016)
Instead of putting up a Christmas tree and buying and wrapping gifts, Nikita Haylock and her family have to go searching for a place to live after their Reggae Street home burnt down last night. The fire is believed to have started on the lamppost near the house. The blaze spread quickly and destroyed everything. Fortunately, no one was inside the house when it started. We spoke to a resident who stood helplessly by as the fire consumed the house. We also spoke to Haylock's mother who told us this is her daughter's second hard hit.

Malcom Mattews, Resident
"We saw the fire. The first thing I saw in the air was smoke and after that I saw flames. I got excited then I got stupid because I wanted to see but I was afraid to come out. I was way at the top."

Therese Leiva, Mother
"The information I got on the fire last night, I was at home about 7:20 because we prepared my next granddaughter to go to the Christmas school event at All Saint's school. My daughter called me about 20 past 7 the same time while I was preparing and she told me her house is on fire. I said 'what? how is that?'. I dropped everything and sent my daughter Rashawn to buy a phone call and I called her sister Florence Haylock to tell her. I hurriedly caught a taxi and I went there. She lost everything. During hurricane this year she had lost everything and her common law husband Jason Velencio and herself Nikita Haylock, went to buy everything over, stove, fridge, they had furnished their house over, they painted it for Christmas. They had started everything all over because during the hurricane they lost everything."

Courtney Weatherburne, 7News
"What the fire department is saying is that it started from a lamppost and then went to the rest of the house."

Therese Leiva, Mother
"They said it started from a lamppost and spread all about but I really want to thank the fire department."

Haylock and her kids are staying at her mother's house right now but would really appreciate the help to be out on their own. If you would like to assist you can call 601 8178 or 601 7980.

There was also another fire two nights ago on Antelope Street extension. A mother and her 3 kids were inside the house when the fire started but they got out in time. There were not able to save anything.
