Mayor Welcomes Community Cash For Streets
posted (March 28, 2017)
And while the CDB is financing that project, The Mayor of Belize City is inviting Belize City neighborhoods to come forward and join in a partnership with the city council to pave streets in their area. He says the formula is simple: all the residents can get together and prepay a few years of property taxes which they would put a down payment towards paving the streets in their area. He says this is working out with Bella Vista on the northern highway:

Darrell Bradley- Mayor of Belize City
"Two weeks ago through the support and the leadership of several members of the community we had a meeting and about 40 to 50 members of that community attended. We are in ongoing discussions with the community, they've already agreed to pay two years of property taxes and two years of property taxes will cover a big chunk of the project. It is this kind of spirit in terms of community engagement and partnership between the municipality and the community that I think will move our city forward; so that, we are throwing this out there as an option to help us to do more streets within the city, of course the city council would like to do all the streets if we had the financial resources, but I think this partnership or this model could be something where we could use in other areas, so that if members of a particular community want to come together, they meet with the city council, we agree on the costings, the contractors and so forth, and we could knock off a significant amount of streets."

The mayor says they're paving 8 streets in Bella Vista which could start in two weeks. They are currently finalizing the scope of work with drainage and other design elements.
