Today marks the official start of the hurricane season, so NEMO and other emergency management agencies gathered at in Belmopan for a "state of readiness" review. The agencies assessed their current state of preparedness for any major natural disaster, and and strategies for response. the National Disaster Coordinator at NEMO, Col. Shelton DeFour spoke to the media today about the review...

Natural disaster response organizations throughout the country will be on high alert until November 30.

And while hurricanes are a visceral threat, don't forget about regular rainy weather. June first is the start of the rainy season and the Ministry of Health reminds the public to be aware of the dangers of Dengue and Zika - which are spread by mosquitoes. They remind the public to discard containers that can collect water in the yard, especially tires, to Cover water storage containers such as drums because these are ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes.
