Over the last few weeks reports of health care and service providers charging patients extra and illegal fees have been circulating. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly which hospitals or clinics this is happening at, the Ministry of Health is already aware of the illegal acts. CEO in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ramon Figueroa, told about how the Ministry is planning on dealing with these cases...

Dr. Ramon Figueroa, CEO - Ministry of Health
"My understanding is that in that in a particular area in the country ambulance was charging for services to populate the transfer of patience and when it's a government ambulance, there should be no charge. So that's why the notice went out. But it's not only that, we are getting anecdotal reports from a long time ago about charges being levied by physicians on a person to person basis at public facilities and that should not be the case. So we can't enforce and we can't ensure that people have free access of healthcare which is the basic principle of the ministry of health. If we don't have people assisting us in monitoring these instances so that we can then take appropriate action."
