Education Minister Reflects on Dismal PSE
posted (June 16, 2017)
A week ago we told you about the PSE results. Basically there has been no significant improvement in performance especially in Math and SCIENCE scores went down sharply. Now while there are those who excelled, over a thousand students got scores of "E" - which is basically a failing grade. It is a concern that is expressed every year but what is being done to really improve these grades? Yesterday Education Minister Patrick Faber told us that one other long term option right now is focusing on early childhood education.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"While you might point out small areas of slippage or even areas of development it is by an large the same it has been over the many years and we can't emphasize any more than we have done in the past that in fact if we are to improve what is going on it has to be all hands on deck , it can't that we are waiting for some superman to come down and help us with these grades we have to take ownership and that means at all levels and especially at the school level, schools must look at these results and try to put in place intervention plans to curve the performance and if course we have to look at interventions from very early because it is not enough for us to just try to do things at Std. 4, 5 and 6 , these problem are occurring very very early this is why we are focusing so heavily now on early childhood education in fact we are focusing on early childhood development so that the learning process can start as early as in the womb and once children get a strong start it is much more likely that later on in the later years of primary school where the PSE is but also at the secondary level and even the tertiary level, in life in general they will be more prepared for success."

Over 7,000 students sat the PSE this year.
