Ladyville Shooting Victim Crawled To Safety
posted (July 4, 2017)
27 year old Elward Mckay is recovering in the hospital tonight after he was shot near his home in Ladyville. Last night after 9:00, Mckay was heading back home on his bicycle after buying food when a gunman opened fire on him on Pigeon Street. Mckay was hit to the back - the bullet exited his chest. He fell off his bike and dashed as fast as he could to the nearest home. I went to Ladyville today and the blood trail he left behind as he dragged himself to residents' front door was still there. We spoke to the resident who told us she simply couldn't do anything for him because she had to keep her kids safe.

Voice of: Resident
"Between 9 and 10, we were inside, just about to close the door, but we hadn't close it yet when we heard the gunshots rang out and all of a sudden before I could reach the door, I heard a young man knocking on the door asking me to please help him. But I'll be honest with you, I am sorry I didn't help him, but I had 3 children and so I wasn't just going to open the door for anybody that I don't know. Actually I didn't even look to see who it was. All I did was I went to the door and I push the main door and bolted it and I listen to see if anything would occur next. I took my kinds into the bathroom and have them lie down on the ground just in case of anything happen."

"Shortly after that the police came and I heard the young man say that he got shot and the police told him to get in the vehicle. I heard them asking if he saw who it was, but I don't know what he told them."

Shortly after the shooting, police arrived and they caught the alleged shooter: 22 year old Ladyville resident Jesse Mejia. Police say Mejia sped off on his bicycle and as they were chasing him they saw Mejia throw something in the bushes. He had thrown a .38 revolver. Mejia was detained pending charges. Mckay's family declined on camera comment but told us that Mckay knows Mejia, and as far as the family is concerned both men had no disagreement or beef.
