New Border Cards No Big Deal Says Immigration Dept.
posted (July 6, 2017)
There was an uproar at the northern border on Saturday when the Immigration Department implemented a new twenty dollar digital border crossing card for Free Zone workers and regular visitors.

The workers say they already earn very little and can't afford it, and claim that the new measure was thrown on them without sufficient notice.

Well, the Immigration Department put out a release today saying that it implemented the card on Saturday after months of consultation with the Corozal Free Zone Management, as well as the major businesses in the Zone.

They go back to January 2017, when the zone management welcomed the border crossing card as a means to facilitate the movement of persons employed in and visiting the Zone.

Also the card was first made available in April when businesses were given applications for their employees. Since then, as many as 2000 cards have been approved and issued.

But still, those who didn't get the memo, or didn't want to get the memo made a ruckus at the border this weekend.

The Immigration department says they are welcome to apply for the cards at the Belize Northern Border Station or the Belmopan Office.
