Terrifying Videos of Hold-Ups Incense Chinese Community
posted (September 29, 2017)
Now, as we noted, there has been a spike in armed assaults on Chinese storekeepers recently - especially in the Lake Independence area. Two security videos circulated recently show armed holdups of Chinese businesses. Two men are seen brandishing weapons at storekeepers, the first on Santa Barbara Street, and the second at the corner of Causarina and Poinsettia Street - which are close to each other - and the scene of Monday nights murder of Bainan Wu is right between those two stores.

The images are truly terrifying - and Quan said they have asked police to do more:...

Edmund Quan - Chairman, Belize Chinese Association
"The law enforcement, they have their duty and I'm not saying they are not doing their job. They are doing their job. They are patrolling, there are checkpoints and stuff like that but perhaps there is much more than can be done because, I mean, criminals have access to firearms too easy, right."

Jules Vasquez - Reporter
"Is there anything the Chinese community can do more, the Chinese businesses in particular, to form bonds with the community and say, you all make a fair amount of money in Belize, a lot of money, you can invest in scholarship programs or something to show the community that it's a reciprocal relationship and you all do put back into the community."

Edmund Quan - Chairman, Belize Chinese Association
"There are things the community can do, the associations right now is flat broke due to the excessive visa fees. We have to do it gradually and don't get me wrong, we do have, I mean myself personally, my business personally, we do donations and stuff like that and a lot of Chinese do donations and sponsorship and stuff like that. But then the thing is Chinese people don't publicize it. The big businesses especially, I know for a fact that Simon Quan does a lot but then they are a prominent business for maybe over umpteen years."

No arrests have been made in either of those cases with the security videos, nor has any been made in the case of the murder.
