PAHO Says Belize Can Eliminate Malaria
posted (November 7, 2017)
The latest reports from the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) say that malaria in Belize has decreased dramatically between the years 2000 and 2015. And, if the strategies of the Health officials continue to work, Malaria could become a thing of the past here in Belize.

In those 15 years, the number of cases of new infections has decreased 99.12%. At its highest, there were 1,486 cases, and at the end of 2015, that number fell to only 13 cases. The last malaria death in Belize was reported in 2006.

The total at-risk population has also declined by 91%, and so has the annual parasitic index, which fell from 4.9 cases, to 0.04 cases per one thousand inhabitants.

According to the PAHO/WHO analysis, Belize is one of the 6 countries from the Americas that has the potential to eliminate malaria by 2020.
