Do Police Receive Proper Weapons Training?
posted (December 4, 2017)
Today Commissioner of police Allen Whylie stressed that it was an accidental shooting - though a tragic one. We asked him if it could have been avoided by giving police better training on how to handle firearms.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"It's a very unfortunate incident. It was explained to me it appeared to have been an accidental discharge, but nonetheless and individual died and I have directed that a thorough investigation be done by the CIB as well as the Professional Standard Branch. So that investigation is underway."

Jules Vasquez, reporter
"Is the use of lethal force - do police officers received enough training in it when we hear and accidental discharge which cost a man his life. We are looking at an issue of the officer properly trained in handling of a firearm?"

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"I will say Jules, that all the offices have been trained properly in the handling of firearm. Can training be improved? Is there the need for perhaps more` regular in service training along these lines? I will be the first to admit and say yes."

7News has confirmed that Edwin Antonio Baires Hernandez was not shot in the knee as ACP Myvett said, he was shot in the right lower leg.
