PM and NTUCB Agree to Public Hearings For Universal Health Services
posted (December 13, 2017)

The Senate Hearings on Immigration ended only just last week after 13 months of public sessions, but tonight, there are reports that another set of public hearings are in the works.

That’s what the National Trade Union Congress of Belize is reporting tonight. They say that the Prime Minister has given an undertaking to set up a Commission of Inquiry, quote, “into all the transactions and circumstances of the acquisition of the Universal Health Services (UHS) facility from inception to present, including questions of ownership and payments made to the Belize Bank Ltdâ€￾ will be established.

According to the NTUCB, this major development came out of their mid morning meeting with Prime Minister Barrow and the CEO in the Office of the PM, Audrey Wallace. They met at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, and according to the union, the Prime Minister has invited them to draft the terms of reference for this Commission of Inquiry. They say that they will hold a special meeting of the entire general council this weekend to get started on that.

The NTUCB also reports that the Commission is the direct result of their last meeting, in which a resolution was passed calling for it. They say that they expect the Commission of Inquiry will be empowered to get full disclosure from all parties involved in the UHS matter, where at the end, recommendations will be made to prevent a repeat of the circumstances in which Belizean taxpayers are now on the hook for 90 million dollars, with nothing to show for it.

The NTUCB says that while most of the time in today’s meeting was spent on the UHS judgement from the Caribbean Court of Justice, they also spoke with the Prime Minister on the non-functional Tri-Partite Body, occupational safety and health, and other pending litigation involving the Ashcroft Alliance.
