Alleged Cocaine Cowboys Sent To Jail
posted (December 19, 2017)
Two men who were caught in the city with 5 kilos, or 11 pounds of cocaine went to court today. 37 year old Peter Schmidt from Caye Caulker and 33 year old Carlos Lopez from Lord's Bank, were charged with trafficking 5.07 kilos of cocaine when they appeared today before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. The cocaine was in a knapsack on the back seat of the SUV they were driving in. And, under the backseat, police found a 9 millimeter pistol with 11 live rounds. So, they were also charged with kept firearm and ammunition without a gun license. With all that, they were remanded into custody until March 8. Schmidt was represented by attorney Ellis Arnold.

Police intercepted the pair on Sunday on Piper Street in Buttonwood Bay. They had been under surveillance in what the commander of operations called a "sophisticated operation."

Police believe the drugs may have originated from the waters off Caye Caulker. It has an estimated local street value of 125 thousand Belize dollars. We note that the vehicle is registered in the name of a Chinese person - whose name police won't release.
