UNCAC Coming Along
posted (January 8, 2018)
And turning now to another United Nations instrument, we today got an update on UNCAC - the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

At this point, Belize has done all it can to advance the implementation of the UN convention, and, the Government is waiting for a site visit and inspection by experts from the two nations, Haiti and Tuvalu.

They were chosen by the United Nations to evaluate Belize's preparedness to take the next step in implementing UNCAC. The delay at this time is that the official documents that Belize has presented have to be translated for the experts.

Today, the AG said that this translation issue has caused a minor delay, but he expects that these experts will be here in late January or early February:

Hon. Michael Peyrefitte - Attorney General
"We're still waiting to hear from UNDP, but we are fully expecting them to come still, either late January, or early February. That's our expectation; that's what we have prepared for, and that's what we want to happen, because we want to get the process going. We know the Belizean public is antsy about UNCAC, as they should be, but it's a process. And we only control so much of that process. The last time, I was told a week, or so, the translation was still not fully completed for Haiti to get their documentation in order, and Tuvalu had still not provided much of its experts that it will be sending to Belize. But, we keep telling UNDP and the UNODC that we are fully ready. I have informed all ministers of government, all CEO's, everybody, that they must be ready and available when these inspectors do come from Tuvalu and Haiti."

The Attorney General told us back in December that the UN organizations commended Belize for meeting all deadlines for the submission of documents required to comply with UNCAC.
