...So right after that official ceremony in Belize City, the Mexican Vice Minister along with his delegation made their way to Belmopan. They attended the official showing of the grand Olmec Head that's at the center of the new round about in front of the hospital. We were there for the unveiling and we found out more about the cultural significance of this structure.

Amb. Carlos Quesnel, Embassy of Mexico
"We have met today to formally inaugurated this replica of the colossal Olmec head number eight whose trajectory to Belize began in October last year from Xalapa, Vera Cruz to this new home on this side."

Amb. Patrick Andrews, CEO, Foreign Affairs
"The Olmec Head is the most striking legacy of the Olmec civilization, it's colossal scale is impressive, the Olmec Head symbolizes individuality and distinctiveness as no two heads are alike. I note these unique characteristics to underscore that Mexico has shared with us a unique aspect of their history and culture which in itself highlights the special nature of the bond between our two countries."

Amb. Luis Alfonso de Alba, Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean
"We are not only neighbors we share a history which is reflected in the presence of the Olmecs and later the Mayas in this region but we also share values and a vision for development, for peace, for human rights for the rule of law and I think that is the relationship that needs to be continued to be strengthened."

"Through this demonstration of friendship we will be able to build a common understanding on what needs to be done in the coming future."

The monument weighs 8,500 kilos- almost 19,000 pounds.

Print Belize, and the Mexican Embassy, along with other partners collaborated in this project.
