Fair is Fair: Bus Insurance for Belizeans Too
posted (August 16, 2018)

There's some border friction between Belize and Mexico on the transport front tonight.

This is after a Mexican ADO bus driver was arrested for driving a bus without insurance.

On Tuesday, 37 year old Eider Tun, a ADO driver appeared in Court to answer to a charge of driving a motor vehicle not covered by 3rd party risk insurance.

Tun pleaded guilty to the charge and apologized profusely.  He said that on Saturday he jumped into another bus without noticing that the isnurance was expired.

Magistrate Michelle Trapp accepted his guilty plea and fined him $100 plus $5 cost of court.

Now, it's a.minor offence and fine but this one has raised major eyebrows. That's because Belizean buses are also required to insure for Mexico runs, but don’t face any penalties for failing to do so.  The issue has been contentious for some time but Belizean buses have always gotten away. The prosecution of a Mexican national, however, seems to be the hair that broke the camel’s back as reports are that Belizean buses, who were warned some months ago that the free pass would soon be over, must now begin to have insurance purchased from a Mexican company. Reports are that the enforcement of these regulations will kick in this week.
