Garbage and Property Tax Comes At An Unfortunate Time, Says PM
posted (January 19, 2022)
Going back now to municipal affairs - we also asked if the PM was onboard with the proposed garbage tax and the 1% increase in property tax. The PM explained that those matters haven't reached his desk as yet so he couldn't say whether it was something he approved of. However, he did say that the increase comes at a very inopportune time.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Again, that has not come to me. And until it comes to us, for us to be able to take a look then we can take a position. Obviously, it is something that we would have to take a very hard look, before we decide whether we would support a garbage tax. Again, we need to add that they were elected, so we can't say do it or don't do it. Thats something that the council would have to decide whether we would support it, that's another matter."

"1% tax has already gone into effect and he said that should have come into effect from 5 years ago and wasn't done, they're doing it now."

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"As I've said I have not been consulted with that. Maybe the timing is not the best of times. I don't know if somebody who is paying $300, you're talking $3.00. I have not heard the citizens crying out of against it. So, probably it's something whose time has come. All the municipal bodies do need the funding to be able to provide the services that their citizens are demanding and expecting of them."
