A jury today needed 4 hours to decide the fate of Constable Burton Caliz. They
found him guilty of the manslaughter of 23-year-old fisherman Leroy Pilgrim
in 2004. Caliz will be sentenced on February second, almost exactly three years
after he killed Pilgrim on San Pedro.
On that night, Caliz shot Pilgrim to the head in the San Juan Area at the back
of San Pedro Town. At the time, police claimed he had a prohibited firearm.
Caliz had been originally charged for manslaughter, and then it was upgraded
to murder, but as it turned out, he was convicted of manslaughter.
And even though he's a convicted criminal, Caliz, like all police officers
found guilty at the Supreme Court, got special treatment from the officers working
as court orderlies. He was smuggled out the back, so that he could not be photographed
by the press, and the image you see here is from 2005.
