Belize City's Worse Road
Fri, October 10, 2008

Which road is the worst in Belize City? With the heavy rains, there could be any number of answers from northside to south, back a town to down town. True enough, the streets are in a state, but one of the most lamentable cases has to be the end of Caesar Ridge Road where it runs into the Customs Department and the Port of Belize. The street is very bad; it has craters not potholes, and mud not dust; and everyday, it gets worse from the excessive load brought on by the heavy container trucks that must pass over it.

It’s one bad street worth noting because it leads to the Customs Department which produces the largest chunk of government’s revenue. Also it leads to the country’s sovereign port which processes a significant percentage of the country’s GDP.

So whose fault it? Well we were told that the port usually grades it but with the rains, that’s not been happening. Whose responsibility is it? That’s another question. There are some who say that the Port of Belize is responsible for its upkeep, but we were unable to reach CEO Reynaldo Guerrerro for comment.
