Crooks Jumped, But With a Vest
Fri, May 28, 2010
He jumped from a cruise ship into the sea to avoid Jamaican Police but tonight Harold Crooks is still in custody and more details of his botched escape attempt are coming to light. As we reported last night, Police got word that he was a passenger on the Carnival Liberty cruise ship at the Ocho Rios Pier and went to execute an arrest warrant on him. On seeing the police Crooks jumped from the ninth deck into the sea. He was rescued by the marine police and taken to the Ocho Rios police station where he was processed. Commanding officer for St Ann Parish, Superintendent Gary Griffiths is quoted in the Jamaican Press as saying that, "He wasn't rescued, he was wearing a life jacket when he was apprehended by the Marine Police," Griffiths said Crooks was captured shortly after he jumped into the water and handed over to the Ocho Rios police.

Crooks is wanted in connection with charges for having sexual relations with an under-aged girl. That came up in March and Crooks fled the island, reportedly to Canada. He told the Jamaican media by phone that he would not be returning to Jamaica, because he had no faith in the justice system.

In 2008 Crooks was retained as advisor to Belize's Ministry of National Security and compiled an over 200 page report with 167 recommendations for reforming the department. The study is considered the definitive remedy for the various problems that plague the police.
