17 Year Old Cyclist Mourned
Fri, September 24, 2010
Only a little over a month ago, Belize celebrated the return of a group of triumphant young cyclists who had taken part in the Tour de Guatemala, and returned with a trophy for best sprinter and the coveted Green Jersey. The group included a young 17 year old by the name of Chris Chuc. Tonight, the nation of Belize along with that group of junior cyclists are mourning the loss of Chuc who was knocked down and killed while he was training yesterday evening on the Western Highway. We spoke to his team-mates today:…

Jim McFadzean, Reporting
This is how young Deezan Spence, Belize's 2010 Junior Cross Country Cycling champion, and the winner of that coveted Green Jersey described the team's euphoria right after returning home from Tour Guatemala.

Deezan Spence, Best Sprinter - Tour de Guatemala
"Well it means a lot to me and our team because we work together as one and we brought home something so we feel good. Most of the guys out there were climbers, so they couldn't sprint good so I had an advantage over them."

It's that humility even in victory so eloquently expressed by Spence that characterized this group of young men. But now that good feeling has gone from one of celebration to one of mourning. This group of talented young cyclists enjoyed the fruits of teamwork and one of comraderie. A comraderie that Chris was an integral part of. During the course of this reporter's interview with the young cyclists just back from Guatemala, that spirit of commitment to teamwork was demonstrated when Chris, reached out to Jose Choto, and offered his jersey to wear for the interview. "that is Chris in the background taking off his jersey for Choto".

Deezan Spence, Best Sprinter - Tour de Guatemala
"Chris was helping us throughout the whole tour and he finish the tour with us and he was a very good team mate, he always help the team. we will all miss him because Chris was always there. He never like had beef or anything, he is a friend to all of us and right now the crowd is afraid to go and ride but I think we will still ride because that is what he love - cycling so I think the crowd will still get back on the bike."

Eduardo "Dito" Juan, Head of Junior Cyclists Delegation
"While I was there but I have been well inform. And I must assume that the driver of the car was very reckless and irresponsible. They were doing what they call a rotation system and when the accident happens Chris had taken his position to the back. The impact of the bike, the way the bike is wrecks will prove to anybody that the car hit him square on the back wheel so it was recklessness."

Juan Umania, Cyclist
"Well he was with some friends, they went to ride and I was to go with him but since I came late from school I never went, then when I finish get ready to go now they call me and told me to call his cousin that he got knock down. But I didn't know it was that bad."

Jules Vasquez
"Is it something that you all are afraid of? I know you all practice on that same road?"

Joel Borland, cyclist
"Well actually I am from Belmopan but I always go down on the Cayo road and this really makes I think twice about it."

Aiden Juan, Cyclist
"Anytime I go out on the road I am a bit scared of what might happen to you but in a way we are already use to that road but even though we go out and we stay on the side but drivers don't respect that nowadays and like what happen to Chris. I like to put a point out to drivers to let them be more careful on the road because he wasn't even by himself he was with a group and that still happen."

Tonight, the man who managed the delegation of junior cyclists to victory in Guatemala, former UDP Minister, Eduardo "Dito" Juan and members of Chris' junior team spoke of the danger to cyclists using Belize's highways.

Channel 7 joins in the celebration of young Chris' life and extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends. The funeral for Chris Chuc will be held on Sunday morning at ten at the RC Church in San Ignacio. All cyclists are being asked to attend in uniform..
