Shooting Accident Leaves Man Dead
Tue, February 22, 2011
There are two hunting accidents to report tonight and regrettably one of them took a life. That one happened in Scotland Half Moon in the Belize District late last night. Two men, 32 year old Elvis Denvo Moody and 24 year old Deon Ferguson left on horseback late last night to go duck hunting, but only Ferguson came back. Monica Bodden spoke to Moody's father about the accident that led to his son's death:…

Monica Bodden Reporting
A hunting trip in the village of Scotland Half-Moon, turned out deadly for 32 year old Elvis Moody.

Moody along with his friend - 24 year old Deon Ferguson- left home at around 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon on separate horses - to go duck hunting at Mussel Creek.

Later that night - around 11 o'clock, Ferguson told police he heard a gunshot - that was when he looked back and saw Moody's head lamp shining upward and Moody on the ground.

Moody had been shot in the head - which killed him instantly. We met his father today.

He saw his son before he left since he was the one who saddled Elvis's horse and got him ready for his hunting trip.

David Moody - Father
"They leave from here and said that they were going hunting."

Monica Bodden
"At what time?"

David Moody - Father
"About 2 o' clock yesterday afternoon. I was the one who saddle the horse for him and he said that he is going and that he will come back. And so he went. About 9 - 10 o' clock the other boy Ferguson who he went hunting with comes out and say that Elvis had shoot himself."

By the time Elvis's brother arrived on the scene, he was already dead. The area where he was hunting is located 1 mile east of Scotland Halfmoon Village.

David Moody - Father
"I didn't go, my other son went to help bring out the body. So when he come back, I ask him what went on? he said 'pa, according to what I see, the boy (Ferguson) talk quite straight to him said that when they went with Elvis was delay back because his horse was giving a little problem' I feel like it is there that the accident happen."

His father believes it was an accident - something that could have happened to anyone.

David Moody - Father
"I say the way that Wayne explains to me that the boy (Elvis) had an accident and he shot himself. Because according to Wayne the bullet went from under his chin and ended up in the head. If Ferguson had done any foul play, he could be shot in that way. It had to be in the chest or in the forehead or to the back to the back of the head."

The family believes that Elvis was riding his horse when the trigger of his gun- which was strapped to his side- may have touched on something which caused it to go off.

David Moody - Father
"According to what Wayne (my other son) told me the boy (Ferguson) told him that when he catch the horse, before he caught the horse he saw when Elvis tumble off the horse. But he feels like it was something that he shoot and he got down off the horse and that's why he drop. Some action went on by him and the horse. No foul play. That's what causes the trigger to pull."

Moody says they were no way his youngest son could have survived.

David Moody - Father
"Most natural if it was an animal that was shot in close range that kind of way would have never survived. You know if a bullet goes through here below your chin and end up in the head. They say when the touches his head everything rattle just like this paper. All the bullet enter his brain. The range is too close. If he got shot from a distance the bullet would have sprayed, it would gather all over his body."

Monica Bodden
"What kind of gun did he have?"

David Moody - Father
"Well I can't even tell you because I am age able and I used to handle with gun. I am not sure if it was a 16 gauge he had or a 12 gauge."

Another serious hunting accident also happened last night, this one in the Yalbac area.

Last night at 8:00, Julio Echavarria LEMUS and his nephew Ugo ECHAVARRIA left from Valley of Peace to go hunting. Lemus bent over to pick up a machete and stumbled, causing his 12 gauge shotgun to go off. Luckily he was only hit to the left arm and left thigh. Lemus was admitted to the hospital in a stable condition…
