Toledo To Have New Primary School
Wed, March 9, 2011
With the fast growing population of Toledo - schools are always running on full. That's why on Monday ground was officially broken for the construction of a new primary school building that will address severe over-crowding in Bella Vista and San Isidro schools. The new school building will include four classrooms with two movable partitions, a male and female bathroom block and an administration office.

Area representative for Toledo East Eden Martinez said it is much needed:…

Minister Eden Martinez, Toledo East
"I can recall when I was going around, discussing with the people from village to village on my campaign trail; the issue of having a primary in this area that would house the students was a concern, because we note that in this area, the Bella Vista school is bursting as it seems in terms of enrollment, and so there is the need for us to accommodate our students, because when we are accommodate them properly then it helps their learning."

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
"As the speakers before me have said, Bella Vista RC, which is not too far away from here, is of course running over, I believe they have close if not over one thousand children in that school and that is not a very good thing. That means, very crowded classrooms that mean conditions that may not be in the best interest of education and that is the whole reason why we decided to do this kind of project. "

The Social Investment Fund will execute the project valued at $379,000.00 - $308 thousand of that is a grant from the Caribbean Development Bank under its Basic Needs Trust Fund. The Government of Belize is contributing approximately $75,000.00, while the communities of Bella Vista and San Isidro will provide $3,000.00 in the form of labor. Once completed, the building will be able to withstand category 5 hurricane winds and will serve as a hurricane shelter.
