Caye Commuters Wild For Water Taxi
Thu, April 5, 2012
Today, many Belizeans headed out to their Easter weekend getaways - and that meant a crowd at the water taxi terminals. So how crowded was it? Our news team went terminal hopping to find out how the water taxis are dealing with the beach seeking throngs. Here's what she found out:..

Jose Marin - Employee, Caye Caulker Water Taxi
"It's the usual, more than the ordinary. So, it's the last minute and people are coming out to go to the cayes. I believe that the rush started late. The years before this, they usually would start earlier at around Tuesday, but right now, today's Thursday, and the rush is picking up. When there is too much, we send 2 boats, like just now. We sent off two boats; it was a bit more than the ordinary, and that's how we handle it. But we are still running at an hour in time and such."

Robin Schaffer
"Do you have any special offers or any promotions that you have to encourage people to come in?"

Jose Marin
"Right now, we are running on our same rates. Some people will give 10% for groups and things of the sort."

Carlyle Rogers - Water Taxi Passenger
"Actually, I'm going across to San Pedro, this afternoon."

Robin Schaffer
"Are you going to spend your whole Easter there?"

Carlyle Rogers
"Yes, I'm going out there to see San Pedro for the first time."

Kein Marin - Operations Manager, San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi
"What I've seen this year is that starting from Monday, the crowd started to grow. Before, in previous years, it started from Thursday that we had a rush. However, as of Monday, we're seeing is a drastic increase. We're handling the crowd quite fine right. We have boats that are leaving up to from 2 to 4 boats per run right now."

Robin Schaffer
"Do you have any special rates for the Easter or anything - any promotions?"

Kein Marin
"Actually, for the passengers, we're giving a 10% discount, and we have an Easter bonanza, whereby you can win up to $2,000 with our Easter raffle for this Easter."

Robin Schaffer
"Where are you going?"

Wilword Belisle - Passenger
"San Pedro."

Robin Schaffer
"And are you concerned about the crush and the rush of that crowd that will be out there?"

Wilword Belisle
"I'm not concerned at all. I don't like it, but I'm going out with my daughter. My daughter is taking me."

Wilmo Munnings
"I'm going to San Pedro."

Robin Schaffer
"And are you concerned about the Easter crush, that rush of people that will be out there."

Wilmo Munnings
"No sweetheart, I am not concerned about that at all."

Robin Schaffer
"Are you going to spend your entire Easter break there?"

Wilmo Munnings
"Oh yeah, you know it. That's what I'm here for, 4 weeks of fun in the sun Belize style. That's how I do it."

Robin Schaffer
"So, Mr. Diego, you say that you're going to San Pedro, are you concerned at all about the rush and crush of the crowds that will be out there?"

Anthony Diego - Passenger
"Yes, I am really concerned because sometimes, when you have too much people, usually crime happnes. Stealing happens. So, so you really have to be careful."

Robin Schaffer
"And will you be spending the whole Easter break there, from now until Monday?"

Anthony Diego
"Yes Miss."

And if you didn't make it today, there is good news for Good Friday travelers: Tomorrow both water taxi services will be open, and the rates are $35 round trip to Caye Caulker and $55 round trip to San Pedro.
