Toledo Villagers Oppose US Capital Energy, Again
Wed, October 17, 2012
US Capital Energy is looking for oil in the Toledo District - in an area that includes Mayan Communal lands and the Sarstoon Temash National Park.

We haven't heard anything about them in a while - and that's because they've been preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment or EIA.

That EIA is now under review by the Department of the Environment - known as the DOE - and a public consultation will be a week from tomorrow.

But SATIIM, the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management has written to the DOE saying that their communities were not consulted during the EIA so SATIIM is requesting that the public hearing be postponed until November.

They say the indigenous communities need time to understand the content of the nearly 300 page document which first has to be translated into Que'chi.

A letter voicing those same concerns was sent to the DOE from the Chairman and Alcaldes of 7 villages in the area.
