Did "EMO Cult" Lead To Suicide In Cristo Rey?
Tue, November 27, 2012
We don't usually report on suicides, but yesterday we told you about the disturbing case of a 36 year old who killed himself - supposedly because of a connection to what he called the EMO cult.

Now, whether EMO is actually an organized cult - or just the imaginings of distressed minds is a matter of some debate. But, it has been linked to a troubling number of suicides in Western Belize - mostly involving teenagers.

This man, though, was an adult - and his father told Daniel Ortiz today - that he was in the grips of delusion:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
36 year-old Marvin Tut's life ended somewhere along this trail.

Police believe that he slit his own throat with a broken bottle, realized the seriousness of what he did and walked 150 yards up the trail to get help.

His friend found him here, and tried to get him to the nearest hospital, but it was too late. He bled out from that wound to the throat.

Today, his dad revealed that Marvin Tut was having hallucinations, and some kind of mental breakdown.

Amor Tut - Father of Deceased
"About around 12-1 he came out and he says that he saw some angel came in with a light and was talking to him. He says that the angel told him that he name will change from Martin to Peter; in the name of Jesus he will start to preach to people, so I told him that that is good. The thing that he did got him excited, one day he start to kick the door and ask me to come hurry to see the angel. I went in the room but I haven't seen anything."

In the course of trying to talk his son down, Marvin revealed very troubling information about himself. He described himself as a prominent member of an EMO cult and said he was suffering some type of crisis of conscience.

Amor Tut - Father of Deceased
"He says: do you hear, people passing and saying emo? I told him that I didn't hear anything. He says yes, they are calling me. After that he told me that he used to be one of the bosses of the emo and he says that he has a lot of friends and that his friends are following him, they want to kill him. He says that it is not only him but that there are 7 of them who are in that religion."

"He told me not to say the word 'emo,' he told me to forget that."

Later that day he was acting as though something was bothering him and he started to rebuke spirits.

Amor Tut - Father of Deceased
"He kick up and jump up and he says that he doesn't have anything with you again (emo), I am the son of God. He says that God has already pays the price for him and that he got power. He told me that now he has power."

His then started to wander about the village, which caused his dad to get concerned. Amor Tut began to search for him, and found people who saw his son walking around saying strange things.

Amor Tut - Father of Deceased
"I asks a guy, please excuse me, he told me yes, and I ask him if he hasn't seen a guy that passes here. He told me that he had just pass by here about 5 minutes ago. I ask him if the guy (my son) hasn't told him anything and he say yes, he says that he is looking for somebody to kill him."

Amor Tut never did find his son then, and a few hours later, he got the news that Marvin was dead. Amor says that he can't form his own conclusion about whether he committed suicide or if someone murdered him.

Amor Tut - Father of Deceased
"I can't say that someone kill me because that morning he didn't go with anyone. I don't have anything that could come to my mind that someone had killed him."

"I only know that what they say that the doctor says that a man can kill himself in that kind of way."

At the hour, the family is having a wake, and his funeral will be held tomorrow. He leaves behind one son.
