Faber Remembers The Heady Days of 2005, and Says "This Da No Dat!"
Tue, January 29, 2013
Amadi did speak at today's event - but we couldn't find him to comment on the Minister's firm assertion that the response was sent on time.

And so while Amadi is the one presently giving trouble at UB - it wasn't too long ago that Faber himself was the one - to use a colloquial term - give "battery" at UB. Unless you're, like…5, you should remember the time in April of 2005 when police dragged Faber across the UB compound. It was historic; it was unforgettable, but Faber says it is a not a parallel event to today's protest:..

Jules Vasquez
"Do you remember your days as (you are still young) a younger revolutionary?"

Hon. Patrick Faber - Minister of Education
"I am told that they are making a lot of comments about my arrest in 2005, but I remind them that my arrest was not any teacher or raise of pay issue. I was trying to get into the University of Belize where Said Musa was giving a speech. I think people are confusing the issues terribly. But none the less I agree with all of those who said that I used to be that kind of person who stands up and I stood up. Let be clear on what he issues back then that were problematic apart from my trying to get into UB into a public forum that the police had try to stop me from getting into. The issues back then were the fact that public money was being siphon off - was being used to pay individual private debts. There was major issue of corruption. You don't hear any of these protesters who are out there today say that the government is stealing millions of dollars and that is why they can't give the teachers or public servants a raise - nobody is saying that. They are saying that maybe there are little issues; government vehicles and I have dealt with the issue of contract officers and I have made my ministry an example. There are I believe 4-5 main contract officers in my ministry but that was not the cause of demonstrations in 2005. The cause today was certainly nothing to what the cause was, so I respect the teachers and the few public officers who are out here demonstrating for what they believe is something that they are deserving of. I too empathized with them as I have said I was once a teacher and a union activist and I empathized with their caused but this is nothing like what happen in 2005."

"Back in 2005, a Minister try to pass a crowd like that - a missile would have flown. I am still cautious but it didn't happen as you notice, so it seems to suggest that yes I was standing for a cause emotions get in the way a little bit, by and large people understand."

In the wake of that 2005 event, Faber filed a constitutional claim against the Government of Belize claiming that his right to liberty and freedom of expression were violated by the police. Then Chief Justice Dr. Abdulai Conteh ruled that they weren't. He found that, quote, ""Freedom of movement is not a license to trespass."
