Nat'l Football Team Coach Glad To Be Back
Tue, February 19, 2013
3 weeks ago, 7News told you about the incident in Costa Rica in which newly appointed National Team Coach, Leroy Sherrier, was threatening to cut ties with the team and with the Football Federation of Belize. It came as a surprise to the nation because he had just led the national team to its best performance in the 2013 UNCAF Copa Centroamericana games by qualifying for the Gold Cup.

A few days later, FFB President Ruperto Vicente called a press conference in which he explained that there was electronic mischief afoot to defame Coach Sherrier, but that he and the Federation had mended fences. He arrived back in Belize a week ago to reclaim the post as head coach and today 7News caught up with him to ask him if he is here to stay.

Here's what he had to say:

Leroy Sherrier, Head Coach - Belize National Football Team
"My plan was to work until the Gold Cup but I was surprised yesterday by Mr. Vicente the President that told us that he wants me and Charlie on a long term contract because he needs us to do a lot of work here in Belize and I am very happy for that to hear that form him and the federation. I think you will have Leroy here for a good while. Work in development, work in coaching, work in courses - a lot of thing we got to do."

"Tonight we want to meet with the committee and we want to sign a contract. This time definitely, it's to protect myself and to protect the federation because I've got some calls from outside, from Costa Rica and they want me to coach over there but I want to work in Belize. I want to work here and give all my experience and all we can do for Belize football."

"Our plan is to work in development; we want to prepare coaches and the youths; coaches in grass roots. The federation cannot wait until FIFA send the people them, we are prepared to do those coaching. We are going to work in development and with the national coaches also."

And while he had a chance, we did ask him to explain why he wanted to leave in the first place. Here's how he described those reasons:

Leroy Sherrier, Head Coach - Belize National Football Team "My mistake was pretending to change Belize football entirely in over desire. I am from a football country and I would like to see in every aspect that Belize football goes in that direction. But then I know that it's going to be difficult. I know that Mr. Vicente is doing his best and he is trying to do all the changes, it's not easy to change 30 years of bad management, it's not easy to change it one day. I would want to change it it one day. Sometime I get frustrated because if the team is doing this then why on this level we cannot do it. A lot of people called me; people from CONCACAF call me and say Leroy the changes will be slow, we are going to help the federation, we are going to help Mr. Vicente but the changes will be slow. You do the changes with the football level; with the coaches but in the other aspect we are going to help Mr. Vicente. We are going to support him in doing all those changes. That's why I decide to come back because I have a promise from CONCACAF that the changes will come. Yesterday was surprise for me to get the good news from the President that he wants me to stay and to help him make those changes."

So, while he is looking to become a permanent fixture in Belizean football, Belize's first ever appearance in the Gold Cup draws ever nearer. So, we asked him to share his plan for the team's preparation for the games to be held in July.

Here's what he told us:

Leroy Sherrier, Head Coach - Belize National Football Team
"Right now we are watching the teams and we are observing some players that we are interested in and we are going to maybe in April/May start to do our camps. But everybody will have an opportunity, the door will be open. One thing we want to do is called in the players and we are not going to accept anybody walking in and showing up without we invite them. We have a base of 7-8 players, something we can work on. We are going to bring in new players but it's not only set up and play; we want to see you in camp and see if you are discipline and committed - a lot of things that we need because the player has to be good off and on the field."

The FFB is in negotiations with Sherrier to spearhead many new initiatives for developmental football, but as we told you, the Belize National Team turned heads in the Copa Centroamericana. And particularly, certain players on the team have generated interest by representatives of international football clubs.

He discussed those players today with us also:

Leroy Sherrier, Head Coach - Belize National Football Team
"I got a text from Dion MaCauley and he told me he was in Portland. I don't know which part or where he is now. Then I got a report that West is also doing his thing over there. I got a report also that Cafu was to play here but he is going to continue in Honduras. Elroy is still playing in Honduras. They have interest in Mariano from Costa Rica, but I never insist on it because I wanted them to play in a team that they can get the money and they get their salary on time."

According to Coach Sherrier, in the coming weeks, they will be sending out invitations to players of interest to join the camp.
