Media Personality Ava-Jean Escaped Unhurt As Vehicle Flips
Tue, October 15, 2013
At the top of our newscast, we showed you that press conference where Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced to the nation that they've ostracized Cayo Northeast Representative Elvin Penner from the UDP.

The press attended in full force, including our colleagues from Love FM. News Director and Talk Show Personality Ava Diaz -Sosa and her camera man, Brian Castillo, were driving back from that press conference to Belize City. While on the Western Highway at mile 43, Castillo lost control of the vehicle on the dangerous white pavement, and they slid off the road and flipped.

Our news team happened to be the second vehicle on the scene and we stopped to render aid. Here's what the first responder Frank Friesen told us:

Frank Friesen, Eyewitness
"I was coming from Belize City, I saw a couple of vehicles in front of me, they were approaching me and I saw one vehicle start pulling off the road - got into the left lane first and then started making a right turn going slowly. I just thought that there must be a lane there, slowly as they were pulling off the road. Then I saw this vehicle flipped, I was surprise when it turn over."

Jules Vasquez
"How did you react?"

Frank Friesen, Eyewitness
"I right away pull off the road, I realize that somebody obviously needed help and I jump out and started flashing my lights at some other vehicles and then I just came off the road to see how the people were."

Jules Vasquez
"No one was hurt?"

Frank Friesen, Eyewitness
"Nobody seems to be hurt."

Ava Diaz Sosa, accident victim
"I was looking at the road and I saw the highway looked wet, it was drizzling a bit. I had just off the phone with my mother-in-law telling her that we were heading back and it's raining and suddenly I saw the driver Brian - he lost control and he was trying to keep the vehicle on the road but it just went into the bushes."

"I think this is one of those time, I think God has his hands on me because I can't tell you what I thought initially. All I know is that I ended up upside down in the vehicle. Thank God I had on my seat belt and I was just praying that everything was okay, but nothing broke or anything like that. I am a little frightened but that's it."

Frank Friesen, Eyewitness
"I couldn't believe a woman - Mrs. Ava, I was surprise to see who was in that vehicle. I was listening to the radio just before that - listening to Mrs. Ava down here in Belmopan and as brave as she was to come out of the vehicle - I didn't expect a woman to be that brave."

Fortunately, both Diaz-Sosa and Castillo walked away from the accident, uninjured.
