PUP Back to Its Roots?
Wed, January 15, 2014

Keeping with the significance of George Price and his contribution to the party, today the PUP hosted the launch of it's first party policy paper – part of a series it wants to do to engage voters. This first one is all about the ideal that Price abided to while in service to the country: social justice.

This principle was the pillar of the party's roots, and the new generations of PUP's have been widely criticized for abandoning one of the cornerstone of the party's credo, which, lest we forget, is to "serve the People."

So today, 7News attended, and we tried to find out if the new PUP is really serious about going back to the beginning. Daniel Ortiz reports:

The symbolism was in full effect at Independence Hall, this morning, at the cradle of the People's United Party, on George Price's birthday, the party would make a gesture to go back to its roots, and promise the return to the policies which made it the winningest party in Belize's political history.

That was when Price, as party founder championed social justice in the push toward Independence.

Hon. Francis Fonseca - Leader of the Opposition
"Today, January 15, the birthday of our great leader and father of the Nation, George Price, this is our purpose. Today, we lay the foundation for all that is to follow, as we embark on the new revolution, governance reform, economic reform, education."

It's the first of the party's policy Position Papers for 2014, the Social Justice Agenda. Analysts say that the party abandoned its roots from 1998 to 2008 when it embraced neo-liberal capitalism. It is widely held that's what caused the party's great fall from grace in 2008, and now the executive says it has listened.

Hon. Francis Fonseca
"The People's United Party of 2014 recognized and accept that our great party has not always kept faith with its roots."

But Fonseca was careful not to trample on the recent past, meaning the Musa years, in his embrace of the distant past, being the Price years:

Hon. Francis Fonseca
"It is fair to say that at times, we have walked away from the straight path that we have been on, and today, we're saying that we recognize that. We accept that, and we are absolutely committed to making sure that we are walking on that path of social justice."

And in trying to recover from those mistakes, the PUP of 2014 is seeking to regain the trust of the Belizean people. They are working to make social justice relevant in facing today's challenges.

Hon. Francis Fonseca
"The People's United Party hereby declare our support for and commitment to the follow specific social justice principles and objectives: 1 the eradication of poverty, 2, universal access to free quality education from pre-school to junior college, inclusive of free text books, via digital technology, 3, universal access to free, quality, basic healthcare and medicines for all Belizeans who qualify under a national roll-out of the National Health Insurance Program, started by the People's United Party, 5, an equitable, non-political welfare to work program providing food, housing, clothing, assistance and skills training to those most vulnerable and in need, 8, providing for a minimum wage adjustment every 3 years to compensate for increases in the cost of living as necessary, to allow all Belizean workers the opportunity to earn a living wage."

It sounds fancy and enticing in theory, but what about its application? And more than that, what about those Belizeans who remain suspicious that the old guard from the dark days of the PUP is still lurking deep below this renovated party?

Hon. Francis Fonseca
"We must show the Belizean people that we are different, and better."

If you would like to see the entire Social Justice Agenda, it will be posted on the party's website at pup.org.bz.
