“Down Di Lane, Eena Di Drain!”
Thu, January 23, 2014
The timeless truism says that progress brings problems - and nowhere is that on more ample display than Belize City. The cementing of 100 plus streets in less than a year has been truly remarkable, but a few important things like drains have suffered. One man who knows that too well is contractor Charles Bucknor. He said the drains at the property he rents on Vernon street at the corner of Youth For The Future Drive have been backed up - and sent water rushing into the apartments, damaging his electrical appliances. Bucknor says the drain is backed up with over six feet of gunk:..

Charles Bucknor
"What happen here we put cement slab here about 4 inches and the water come right up in these people place like 2 feet high. These people are suffering here, their tiles got lift up because of the water. One time I got about 4-5 people to dig out here and they told me that of I put the dirt of the sidewalk they will charge me, but this is their thing to dig out this drain. Everybody is punishing here, the water is rising high. The refrigerator spoils for this lady here."

"How long is it been going on like that?"

Charles Bucknor
"This has being going on for a long time now. This drain has like 6 feet of mud down here. If they push something to check they will see like 6 feet of mud because I checked it. See the hole here, there is no cover. They throw all kinds of things in there and the dirt from off the street goes in there and fills it with mud."

"They need someone to come and dig out this drain. For years they say that they will dig this out and they don't come."

Central Government has committed two million dollars to fixing the drains to go along with the streets.
