Rt. Hon. Musa: PM Barrow From Hercules To Humpty Dumpty
Mon, March 24, 2014
Turning now to politics - the 2014 - 2015 budget was debated today at the House of Representatives in Belmopan. As per parliamentary convention, Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca started with his response to Prime Minister Dean Barrow's 6th budget. He said it exposed the Prime Minister like a ringmaster at a circus:

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition
"This is a UDP government that is disconnected, out of touch and high on themselves. And the budget presented on March 7th by the Honorable Minister of Finance, the Prime Minister reflects that disconnect, reflects that arrogance. Like the ring master at a cheap circus, the Minister of Finance smeared on the makeup and the lipstick, sprayed himself from head to toe with some five dollars "Kush Kush" and for good order, even recited some Shakespeare, but Mr. Speaker, no amount of makeup can hide the ugly reality of the Belizean people and no amount of cheap cologne can cover up the smell of this rotten UDP government."

"The game is over master. The ringmaster, Mr. Speaker, is standing all alone on center stage under the big circus tent and his pants are on the ground. You try to talk pretty Mr. Prime Minister, but the Belizean people reality ugly bad. The UDP jobs plan Mr. Speaker is to send you to break stone on street - that is their jobs' plan."

"Call the elections and you will feel the wrath of the Belizean people in every corner of this country."

Hon. John Saldivar
"You have to get your tubes ready because there is an election coming - that's on March 4th, 2015. You will get your chance and all those in the gallery with you will get their chance to see if they are you are better than us."

"The broken stone, was that what I heard the member for Freetown, was that how I heard him talk about our street infrastructure program in Belize City and in all of the country - is that what you consider it to be? Is that what you are telling your hangers' on that that's not good enough job for them, that it's better to go and shoot people, it's better for them to go and rob people? The gall of you to come here and try to suggest to our young people out there that there is some indignity in working. What kind of signal Mr. Speaker, what kind of signal are you sending to our people? So who will build the streets if there is no dignity in building the streets? Who will pick up the garbage if there is no dignity in working?"

Rt. Hon. Said Musa
"Unlike Hercules, the Honorable Prime Minister is not cleaning out any stables, he is too busy trying to cover up the filth. The mighty Hercules Mr. Speaker has become Humpty Dumpty on the wall. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and all the kings' horses and all the kings' men cannot put Humpty together again."

Fonseca's Budget response came in at 30 minutes, which is considered short.

And while the house meeting itself was straightforward and mostly uneventful - after Musa's speech, his supporters who crowded the gallery left en masse. One of them made a ruckus - and he to be put out - which seemed to have been the plan. The debate continued until 5:30 pm today - and will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 am. It is expected to continue into the evening, when the Prime Minister will wind it up.
