Stolen Guns Spill-Over? Family Claims Police Victimization
Fri, May 9, 2014
Last week Friday night at this time police were searching the home of Constable Yannick Wade's girlfriend - desperately searching for 8 stolen weapons. That search led them to all his family members including his brother in law, 29 year old Jermaine Patnett and eventually his home.

But here is the twist of the story; Patnett, who lives at a different address from his family, went to visit his mother for her birthday on Saturday morning but had no idea that his family was detained by police. He walked right into custody and that was the beginning of a very bad week where he was accused first of hiding weapons and then of murder. It has thrown he and his wife's lives into chaos - they told Monica Bodden about it today.

Jermaine Patnett
"I was taking an ice cream for my mom when I was at the gas station when a police truck was passing and it stopped. Two of them jumped out and ran to me telling me to get down, they search me and slam me against the vehicle. When I get in the vehicle they ask me for some guns that I don't know anything about. Then they handcuff me and one of them that was sitting down on the left started to elbow me in my chest asking me where the guns are. He hold me by my mouth and squeezed it and ask me my name and I told him my name is Jermaine."

Monica Bodden
"At that time was Miss Shirley and your mom and everybody else already at the station?"

Jermaine Patnett
"They were already detained."

Monica Bodden
"Did you know?"

Jermaine Patnett
"I didn't know about it. I was taking for ice cream for her, I thought she was at home."

Monica Bodden
"When they took you to the police station, what happened there?"

Jermaine Patnett
"When I reach there they just lock me down."

Monica Bodden
"Now, apart from that, Wednesday they had a murder. I understand you were picked up on Thursday as well."

Jermaine Patnett
"I was picked up yes on Thursday about 10:45 on King Street. I was going to get some pig tail buckets for my girlfriend to make some stuff for the ice cream shop. They told me I was detained for a murder in Ladyville that I know nothing about. Then they took me to Queen Street Police Station, held me there for about half an hour and then they bring me back down, put me in a 4Runner and took me to my girlfriend work where they told her she had to close the shop to go to her home to make a search for ammunitions. When they reached, they ransack the house and didn't find anything, so they took me to Ladyville and detained me."

Monica Bodden
"I understand that you guys have an alibi."

Jermaine Patnett
"Wednesday night at 5:30 I attend a meeting for my daughter at Natius, a workshop from 5:30 to 7pm."

Monica Bodden
"And that was the time in which the murder occurred?"

Jermaine Patnett
"From my understanding that was the time."

Monica Bodden
"You have your attendance slip signed?"

Jermaine Patnett
"Yes I have my proof signed when I reached. I told the police all of that. I told them if they want they could go and check it out, but they didn't pay me any mind anyway."

Alicia Oliver, Common-law-wife
"This affect me a lot ma'am because: 1), they came to my work, they had me call my boss. When I call my boss she told me that she will come right now. She call me back and said that she cannot make it, just shut the shop."

Monica Bodden
"This was when?"

Alicia Oliver, Common-law-wife
"Yesterday about 11:30 - 12:00 this is happening and I went and took them at my house. They ransacked my entire house."

Monica Bodden
"They were looking for what?"

Alicia Oliver, Common-law-wife
"Ammunition, when I got the understanding, it's for a murder that have him for. I was like I am going to the school to get my papers and things like that because I have all of it in black and white - the papers. I went to the principal and talk to her. Yesterday I left this shop at 5:35pm yesterday. My boss this morning text me and tell me to please come into the store at Eve Street. When I went in there she fired me due because she had already told me to stay out of it. I cannot stay out of it because anytime by law and by rights they will come for me to start search my house. I can't tell them no because my house doesn't have anything. So I know I am free by that, so I let them went and search my house. They left my house ransacked. They just messed up my life because I had a full time job, now I doesn't even have a full job again."

Audrey Matura - Shepherd, attorney
"When I went to talk to my client, he said that he could tell me where he was. He said not only that, when I was brought here by Belize City police station officers, he says the investigating officer Cpl. Sutherland told them this man is of no interest in this case, we are not looking for him. They refuse to release him. So I went back to the senior officer and I told him that my client just told me this. I said I want to talk to the investigator and he said that he lives in Rancho Dolores. He gave me the phone number and I call Cpl. Sutherland, Cpl. Sutherland says that they should have release that man a long time, I told them he is not an interest in this case - we don't even want him for the murder of the man in Ladyville. I said I am glad to hear that. I went and spoke to the senior officer and he said that he doesn't have it in his powers to release the man, he has to go through the seniors - they don't have access to phones. I said to him that he could use my phone. Anyway there was some texting and a little after that, I don't know you text him or whatever, but he got instructions that the person could release because I told him that I am not leaving from here."

"If I knew this man, there was basis for him to be interviewed and interrogated. I know the police can do that within 48 hours. Here you are bringing living proof this man is not involved and you will tell me that you won't release him just because you have the powers to keep him there."

Alicia Oliver who is Patnett's common-law-wife was an employee of Scoops Ice cream parlor.
